INL offers today a full-fledged nanotechnology laboratory enabling leading forefront research of highest international standard. The state of the art facility extends over a total campus area of 47000 m2, with a construction area of 26000 m2. This includes 7,500m2 of individual and central laboratories, including the high accuracy laboratories, a cleanroom with 1000 m2, an auditorium and other public areas with 4,800 m2, technical areas with 3,500 m2, and administrative areas with a total of 700m2.

INL was created under an international legal framework and is also the first research organization in the world, with an international legal status, entirely focused in the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology.

Beyond the strive for research excellence and to realize its ambitions for translating knowledge into societal benefit, INL focus its nanotechnology research activities on the grand challenges of Ageing & Wellbeing, Urban & Mobile Life and a Safe and Secure Society and in the four application sectors that are of regional, national and international importance: health technologies/nanomedicine, energy, environment and food quality control and safety.
